sub days
Teachers get sub days for mandatory meetings: professional development. however, these days are often times 3 sub days in a row!!! And the professional development may or may not be applicable to the classroom. 3 days is too long to be away from the structure of the classroom and actually hurts the kids -- behavior and the lesson plan both go out the window when a sub is in charge. sure, some subs are great and do their best, but do you remember your subs in high school? enough said. it worries me to leave the kids...

let me share a day in an elementary school in a poor rural school district with a graduation rate of 64% with a school report card of D's and F's, by the way we are a school improving and make AYP
Zero tolerance means zero consequences,,,for the students that is,,,,,,,, it takes a village to raise a child,,,,,,,,,I guess thats why most of the children live with grandparents! The parents are in another village I guess. Anyway 7;15 in the morning teachers are instructed to pick up their students from cafeteria having breakfast and take them to the classroom every morning I get my students and maybe 1 or 2 come with me while the rest stay and continue to eat slowly and socialize I have been told they would be sent on, well they straggle in the classroom within the next 5 minutes ,,same big mouth boy yelling and carrying on, I hear my students comming down the hall like a herd of buffalo, but I guess it makes more sense that I get in the classroom with those one or two students (I can't figue this one out)while the others can get run out and the day gets started in a disorderly fashion as possible. you know the boy, the one that the teacher mistreats and picks on. Well with the next five minutes in the mist of that chaos some crazy music begins on the intercom,,, I'm the candy man or it can be anything followed by 1 of 7 versions of the national anthem followed by the pledge of alligence and then a moment of silence that lasts every bit of 60 long seconds all of which while I have answered 45 questions and given 30 reminders and reprimands, take the hood of your head, keep your hands to yourself, please don't throw things, no I don't have a pencil, yes you can go to the restroom after then announcments, give that back no you can't use my cell phone, please don't touch that, no fighting, keep your hands to yourself, stand up for the pledge, wait till after the announcements, I guess each child has to be told the same thing every morning 3 times each whew thats over now its time to protect the precious instructional time that teachers are held accountabble for because everyone else is allowed to waste it for us so we the teachers must be held accountable to the the rigors of using every minute to the fullest in terms of instruction, which in all acutality the students are not ready to learn because they still havn't learned to follow basic rules and they still don't have basic social skills or manners and they certainly don't know how to follow directions but I attempt to teach anyway I guess because its my job I began and then I notice the more involved in teaching I get the more involved students become with each other,,, this is my que to stop teaching and give the assignment so then I can begin to give each student indivdual instruction because they don't have a clue what to do. Meanwhile my ringleader and gang buster are just cranking up for a day of bullying and disrespect, of fun.......
Has anybody ever figured out why is was necessary for teachers to be trained because administrators think they have to tell us every move to make, retrain us as teachers every year and whatever they do don't ask a teacher what they think because well were just there to be abused by students, administrators, and parents.
My favorite part of all my job is when I reach the point of not being able to tolerate the child I mistreat and abuse anymore I send him to the office and ISS consists of him sitting in a conference room unsupervised in the office with 2 other boys seeking the same punishment. Oh but I still have a duty free lunch to look forward to I escort my kids to lunch and when I pick them up they are all lined up all them still eating something.
Am I missing something here,,,,who supervises the cafeteria..... Mr Man is still making the rounds with a big smile on his face and everything is GREAT,,,,,Oh I forgot the part about how the cafeteria treats the teachers when we come though line the ladies serving tell us to go get our own lunch because they are busy serving the kids or we get fussed at because we didn't let cafeteria know we were going to eat a lunch by 10:00...RULES ARE ONLY FOR TEACHERES I guess because we are the only ones stupid enough to follow them and maybe thats why the principle will only ask the teachers to do everything or anything and forget about the other full time professionals on staff what is there role QQQQQQQQq our librarian teaches only 1 class a day what else does she do QQQQQQQ oh by the way that is the cafeteria monitor and the person in charge of ISS but she can't have the students in ISS in the library when she has her 1 class a day the library is 5 times the size of a classroom and the 3 boys could be more spead out in there than in a classroom and teachers put up with their bad kids everyday in the classroom and we TEACH also but then when we decide to discipline Johnny wants to be disciplined because in ISS he has more freedom than in the classroom because I don't know I am a classroom teacher and I follow the rules and I am accountable and I am insame because it seems like only teachers follow the rules while everyone else makes their own rules and who's in charge never seems to notice because they are too busy making sure the classroom teachers ARE FOLLOWING THE RULES/// so the other paid professianls can Make up their own rules Not during that 1 hour of instuction time a day even with an assistant. Who's more responsible her or the Principal? Her because she used to be a classroom teacher and now she's a LIBRIRIAN or the principal because he's in charge and he walks around in a stupor of drunken ignorant bliss of the elephant in the office! ////////////////////////

I know EXACTLY how you feel! Reading your story made me cry, laugh, and then cry again. I bet we are all going through the same type of things. I don't know why we keep living up to our responsibilities when no one else does, but I guess it is because in the ends, we are truly the ones who care. But in the end, the media will demonize us for it all because our wanting to get paid for this is some kind of sin. I heard on Fox News recently someone say that teacher unions are worse than Al Qaeda. Why? Because they work for us to make a decent salary for all this!
